Are social skills simply a collection of phoney behaviors that we as humans use to help us get what we want?

I'm not naturally shy and socially anxious. As I study socializing and how humans "act" in social situations, the more I feel that social skills are basically just deceptive, adaptive behaviors that we as humans use, in part, to make ourselves look good. Am I missing something?

I think that's largely true, although communication is also a part of it. The thing is there is no "skill" that can be a substitute for depth, and communicating clearly doesn't necessarily mean someone really appreciate what is being pointing to. The thing is, if nobody is interested in any kind of depth or even recognizes that there is such a thing, then all things being equal social skills become the most important thing - whereas someone with a deeper appreciation of the human condition may take one look at that and regard it as shallow, nor does their expression necessarily require social skill because it speaks for itself - although the message may not be a pleasant one.
